Microgreens VS. Sprouts from Noble Planter

Microgreens vs. Sprouts: What's Actually the Difference?

Microgreens and sprouts may start from a seed and look similar at first glance, but they aren't the same thing.

One of the biggest differences comes down to how they're grown, when they're harvested, and what part of the plant you eat.

What Are Sprouts?

Sprouts are seeds that have just begun to germinate. They're typically grown without soil or another traditional growing medium and are harvested very early in their development.

When you eat sprouts, you're generally eating the seed, root, and young shoot together.

Because sprouts are commonly grown in warm, moist conditions, food-safety practices are especially important during their production.

What Are Microgreens?

Microgreens are allowed to grow beyond the sprout stage.

They're grown in a growing medium and given light as they develop. Depending on the variety, they're typically harvested once their stems and first leaves have developed.

Unlike sprouts, microgreens are cut above the growing medium, meaning the roots and seeds are left behind.

At Noble Planter, this is the little plant you know and love — varieties like our Signature Salad Mix, Broccoli, Zesty Mustard, Pea Shoots, and more.

So, What's the Big Difference?

Think of it as two different stages in a plant's life:

Seed → Sprout → Microgreen → Mature Plant

A sprout is one of the plant's earliest stages. A microgreen has been given additional time, light, and room to develop before harvest.

That extra growth also gives microgreens their characteristic colors, textures, and concentrated flavors. Depending on the variety, they can be mild and fresh, sweet and crunchy, earthy, or surprisingly spicy.

Why Does the Difference Matter?

Understanding the distinction is especially important when you're shopping for fresh greens.

When you purchase microgreens from Noble Planter, you're not purchasing sprouts. You're getting locally grown young plants that have been intentionally grown to the microgreen stage, harvested above the growing medium, and prepared for you to enjoy.

Tiny plants. Big flavor. And definitely not sprouts. 🌱
